We had planned our departure from Venice the night before--up, shower, breakfast, checkout, catch the #82 boat back to the train station, then the train to Milan where we'd catch another to Varenna, one of several little towns on Lake Como.

Our plan went flawlessly. However, we nearly had heart attacks when we arrived at the train station and saw posted signs announcing a strike! Luckily, the strike was scheduled to start at 9 p.m. and last 24 hours. Still, the notion that one of these common strikes could completely screw up one's itinerary was unnerving.
