To be fair, we're not sure why we were dreading Milan so much. Maybe because we were leaving quaint Varenna behind for a busy, noisy, grimy big city. Maybe we were just tired and ready to go home. Probably a little of both.

The train to Milan was full to the brim. We managed to find a little spot with one fold-out chair next to the bathroom. It was only an hour-long journey, so it wasn't too bad.

As we left sunny Varenna and traveled South, the weather turned as gray as our spirits. By the time we disembarked, it was cold and threatening rain.

Deb had booked us a hotel near the Duomo. It was a short trip on the Metro. (BTW, did we say nothing could faze us at this point? We were wrong! The bathrooms in the Metro station were like something out of Blade Runner. Totally   gross! The subway itself was pretty clean, and well- marked. Go figure....)
